Celebration of Breadfruit- Reviving a Seychellois Tradition for a sustainable future

Celebration of Breadfruit- Reviving a Seychellois Tradition for a sustainable future which was held on Saturday 25th March 2023 at Domaine de Val de Pres, Au Cap.

The breadfruit, once a staple in the Seychellois diet, has sadly fallen out of favor in recent times. However, a group of passionate individuals and organizations worked together to reintroduce this versatile and nutritious fruit to the public through the creation of Breadfruit Day by the Creative Seychelles Agency within the Seychelles National Institute of Culture, Heritage and the Arts.
Collaborating on this initiative were the National Heritage Resource Council of the National Institute for Culture, Heritage and the Arts, the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Climate Change, Ministry of Health, and the Seychelles Tourism Academy. They hoped to expand the event into a full-scale breadfruit festival in the future, showcasing both the tourist attraction and business potential of the fruit.
The breadfruit tree, with its spectacular display of large, green fruits, provides a highly nutritious food source. Its starchy, fibrous flesh is rich in protein, gluten-free carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. The fruit can be prepared in various ways, from being roasted whole on a fire to being fried as crisps or chips or even used in a sweet traditional dessert.
We would like to extend our gratitude to all those who have participated in this initiative and contributed to its success, including the Events Team, Staff, and Ministries present today. Together, we can make a difference and create a lasting impact for our community and our environment.
